Quilt – Mieke Duyck – Quilt Design

TITLE: QUILT Design

Duration: One whole day

Description: This workshop is aimed at anyone who loves to create and make modern quilts (without necessarily being arty), inspired by traditional as well as very contemporary designs, with the help of modern techniques and fabrics. You will learn to make a top on a design wall – which is a different way to work from a drawing or a (scale) model – starting from the basic shape: a square with its full creative potential! Whether you prefer machine- or hand-piecing makes no difference, you will be free to work as you please. But you will learn how to find inspiration, how to translate your ideas into a design then actually making it with fabrics, plus a host of other topics and tips so that you will leave the room with your head full of ideas and above all, a fantastic desire to create!

Starting from a good assortment of innovative prints (by Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler, Art Gallery, for example, or by African, Australian and Japanese designers, or from a lovely collection of batiks or plain/tonal fabrics, not forgetting the most recent designers: Tula Pink, Anna Maria Horner…), and working your way on your design wall, you will have produced a full top by the end of the day.

Important: Not to worry! No need to have an idea or project for this workshop!

For this lesson, the students must bring:

Mieke Duyck will not have any kit for the students. YOU HAVE TO bring your own fabrics.
Please find the details below:
Your own equipment + Paper and pen to take notes, camera, ruler, bias square (optional), rotary cutter and mat (be sure to have new blade!), pins, sticky tape (the sort painters use and that leaves no marks), good quality batting (avoid synthetic) approx. 1.50 x 2 m.
Bring your own choice of fabrics: a min. of 12 assorted prints of a collection, in 25×110 cm strips or in fat quarters (approx. 45 x 55 cm), in a variety of small and large motifs and colours, plus 1m of dark fabric (either plain black or brown, or batik, or even tonal print).
